It’s that time of year around our house, grocery store, and farmers markets. Strawberry season. Yes, those yummy healthy little treats are popping out of gardens everywhere. Did you know that strawberries are good for the eyes?  Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, which plays an important part of strengthening our cornea and retina. The antioxidant properties of strawberries may help prevent cataracts, that clouding over of the eye lens that can lead to blindness as we age.

Not only are strawberries good for the eyes, but the rest of our bodies as well. A Harvard study found that a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins, found in strawberries can reduce the risk of a heart attack in women by 32 percent. Strawberries also contain powerful antioxidants that work against free radicals, inhibiting the growth of some cancer tumors. Strawberries are also high in potassium, which helps controls blood pressure. So pick up a few strawberries today and enjoy another tasty summer treat that’s good for you too!
